A higher retention rate means more predictability of revenue, deeper social connections and an increased and committed member base. You might find countless methods of engagement for members on the internet, but you'll never know whether they work until you test them yourself.

We reached out to Funk Roberts, a well-known fitness trainer on the internet and active member for many years, to talk about the techniques that have allowed him to improve retention, engagement and even revenue.

Here are the strategies Funk Robert shared with us.

1. The  Shared Rituals Strategy

These shared rituals are constant and repeatable events that your participants take part in frequently which creates a sense of community and belonging. They act as glue to keep your members coming back and strengthen their bond with the group.

One of the main advantages of this strategy are:

  • Builds strong communities
  • Encourages regular engagement and participation
  • Increases member loyalty and retention

What do you think this will look like in real life?

I run a membership program that is called " Over 40 Alpha." It is an exercise and health membership for men over 40, 50, 60, and beyond. I run several shared rituals within this program to ensure that the participants are committed to the goal as well as the group.

  • sweaty selfies: Members post pictures following every workout, sharing their dedication and inspiring others to do the same.
  • Alpha Meal Posts The members share pictures of their meals and break them down into macro components to foster accountability and educate members of the community.
  • Birthday burpees For birthdays, members film themselves doing burpees in line with their age. This is fun and challenging and brings joy within the local group.

How do you create these common rituals with your group members?

  • Identify key activities or behaviors which align with your tribe's members' objectives.
  • Make easy-to-follow instructions or hashtags that encourage participation.
  • Make sure to include these steps in your onboarding materials to establish expectations right from the start.

When you incorporate these common rituals and rituals, you'll create an exciting, engaging environment that members don't want to go to.

2. The 'Identity Crafting' Technique

The art of understanding your market's target customers is more than just understanding their demographics, it's the ability to understand their wants goals, challenges, and hopes. People don't just need to purchase a item or a service. They desire to be part of an organization that is bigger than them.

If you can create a distinct and strong identity for your community, you can give members the sense of belonging and satisfaction in the person they're becoming by participating in the program you've created.

The majority of people want to be part of an organization, they want to feel valued and respected. And they wanna feel part of something greater beyond themselves.

The benefits from this method are:

  • Creates a strong sense belonging
  • Your membership is distinguished from those of your competitors.
  • Increases engagement and increases loyalty

Within the Over 40 Alpha program the participants aren't simply joining a fitness program but becoming over 40 Alphas. It is a symbol of the strength of commitment, dedication as well as transformation. Every aspect, from the ceremonies to the language strengthens the identity of this group, making it a badge of honor.

What can you do to ensure that the same feelings to your employees:

  • Define a unique brand identity that is in tune with your viewers' aspirations.
  • Include this image in your rituals, content as well as your communication.
  • Continuously reinforce this identity through stories, testimonials, and community interactions.

If members adopt their own identity, which is aligned with their values and values, they are more involved in the community, increasing the likelihood of them staying.

The 'Insider Language' Method

Every successful tribe uses its own language, an unspoken handshake that distinguishes insiders from the outside world. The creation of unique words, slogans, or even hand signals which only you and your group use could create a strong sentiment of belonging and exclusiveness. The insider dialect helps create a unique and hard-to-replicate culture.

Some of the key benefits of this method include:

  • It fosters a sense of exclusivity and position.
  • Community bonds are strengthened.
  • Helps to encourage long-term loyalty by making members feel as if they are part of something unique.

Inside Over 40 Alpha, there are members with phrases like:

  • GID (Get It Done! ) GID (Get It Done!) is our rallying call which reinforces our determination to action and persistence.
  • "Smell The Rose": An opportunity to remember to breath, pause and appreciate the journey.

They're not just catchy words; they are a aspect of the tribe's DNA. They help create a community where members feel like they are apart of something that is unique and distinct, something they'd like to remain as a member of.

How can you get this to happen for your group members?

  • Make up unique words or phrases that represent your community's beliefs and goals.
  • Make sure to use these terms in all of your website, email messages and even events.
  • Encourage members to take these ideas and apply them on their posts and interactions.

The creation of a common language creates a sense of community that people are proud to be part of. This is directly affecting retention.

4. The "Transformation Journey" Framework

One of the most efficient ways to boost retention is by guiding members through a transformation journey by providing clear goals, rewards as well as community support. This gives them a reason to remain and keep progressing in the context of your membership.

The main benefits from this framework are:

  • Helps keep members engaged and motivated.
  • Provides a clear path to follow, reducing overwhelm and confusion.
  • Encourages continuous membership renewal.

How to implement this: Craft a path which leads to change, in which each member begins from a predetermined point and follows a path towards their goals, by your assistance each step.

What I'm doing in my program:

  • Milestones: Make signs throughout the journey to mark your progress (for example, Milestone T-shirts that members of Over 40 Alpha Over 40 Alpha program earn at the end of each phase of the "One Year To Alpha" journey).
  • Incentive Programs: Reward achievements to motivate the next steps.
  • Community support: Ensure nobody walks on this journey without support by encouraging a sense of encouragement and support.

How can you implement this model for your staff members:

  • Create a clear and step-by-step plan for a member's transformation.
  • Set up meaningful milestones that can be celebrated by rewards.
  • Make sure that the community is supported throughout the year through the group's challenges, checks-ins and encouragement.

Implementing a transformation journey framework gives a compelling reason for members to stay. The members are constantly moving towards a defined goal that is rewarded with tangible results.

"We've tried a couple of other membership tools that included in packages we'd opted to invest in. However, there's nothing that can beat the Member. I know that there's a lot of cool stuff out there that people have been building through time. But when it comes to personalization, if your make use of WordPress it's impossible to do this. Naturally, I'm bias, but we've made thousands of dollars through this program."
