Triathlete's knowledge commerce journey goes from coaching to courses to a membership-based community

Apr 25, 2022

A doctorate degree in exercise physiology and conducting research that is peer-reviewed, as well as coaching Olympians and pro Ironman athletes was not enough for Dan Plews. Dan Plews. Also, he's an avid triathlete and the 2018 Ironman Age Group World Championship Course Winner record holder. He ran a time of 8:24:36.
In the wake of his win, and his extensive education on the subject the field, he was asked a lot of questions , particularly regarding the lower carbohydrate diet and the best way to use it in long distance triathlons.

So, Professor. Plews decided to monetize his skills through Endure IQ by adding the title of 'knowledge maker as one of his professions. We'll look into his story.

This interview has been lightly edited for clarity.

Coaching rapidly led to courses

In the beginning the initially, Dr. Plews started out with direct coaching. Dr. Plews noted that there was what he was able to do with one-on-one sessions.

In the year 2019, Endure IQ got its beginning. "I received so many questionsand I decided to simply make this into the form of a course. Originally I thought, 'Oh I'll create an easy white course you can put on PowerPoint'. But then, I spoke with a friend who said, 'Well If you're planning to do it then you should take it seriously.'"

Today, we have four core courses and other mini-courses. Dr. Plews says, "Our primary courses consist of ten modules long and about ten to fifteen hours of learning. Students have access to the course for a time period of 10 to 12 weeks, and have access to instructors." The courses are accredited with affiliations including The American College of Sports Medicine, National Strength and Conditioning Association as well as USA Triathlon.

Courses take off

EndureIQ launched a pre-launch of their course LDT One-on-One. "We said we were going limit it to the first fifty people, and it went on sale in just 3 minutes." Dr. Plews recalls.

The course was a huge success! However, the feedback was massive. Dr. Plews quickly learned his course students were interested in having access to the course materials and instructor-led webinars after they had completed the course.

The situation presented him with the problem of having to offer ongoing assistance. The following is his thoughts regarding this issue:

"I did not want to keep the course available indefinitely, since it gave students the ability to continuously ask questions all the time that is at your of the whims and calls but that's not the way education works. If you're a university student taking a class, you get access to experts, teachers and the instructor for that period, but you're not able to ask them questions throughout your existence."

Responding to customer demands and creating revenues

So Dr. Plews discovered a way to satisfy the demand of customers and generate recurring income using the same course material. His solution: a $5 per week subscription for access to the material and webinars to those who complete the course.

"I joined this program almost immediately. This is a good choice because there are a lot of customers who have returned," He explains.

He charges $5 per week for each course the student ever took, as a loyalty perk for students who have taken several classes. Dan said he had 175 students within the education group during our discussion. Thus, he is able to bring in a substantial quantity of income every week by simply providing access to materials for the course and being able to respond to questions.

Subscription revenue opens doors

Now, the subscription brings in revenue, and the revenue in turn facilitates other opportunities for his business.

Dr. Plews says, "The most significant benefit of the subscription model is the ability to make better business decisions. If you can be assured of a higher revenue stream and you're able to be a bit more aware of the people you're hiring and where you're putting your money because it's less risky. When you're 100 100% dependent on revenue, you're never sure what each month is going to bring."

The author also pointed out that the existence of an active community is another advantage - it provides a pool of active members who can survey for new courses or other relevant feedback.

But, Dan is realistic about what it takes to maintain a successful membership community. "The negatives are that the service is never off," he says, "There are a great deal of support for customers that is part of the subscription model since people are always asking issues."
