The illustrator of a book, Soosh, talks about her fairytale illustrations.
While I was looking up Soosh to begin this article thoroughly, I came across her video clips. If you've seen her work, you'll notice it's as if an old fairytale is reborn. With her voice in the form of tales, she creates it a full-rounded magical experience bringing her fairytale characters to life. Read on, but be sure you stop by on the YouTube channel and sip a cup of hot tea and prepare yourself to enjoy a fairytale-themed night.
We asked Soosh what she believes is the most important thing for capturing those small moments of everyday life in her artwork
"Hello, I'm Soosh. I was raised and born by the people. I identify myself with no religious, ethnic, or national background or other. Although I am aware that there are modes of drawing and painting that we call styles, I have never given an ounce of thought about what sort of style my drawings could fit into. If I tried to come up with a word for the style, I would say it's a "fairytale realist" type of style. But speaking frankly, no style.
I think the key, as I understand it is to look through your heart as with your eyes. It might take some repetition to notice the small things, like with every other skill. The trick is to remain silent for a few minutes and be completely present in the moment. Pay attention. Observe closely, without haste.
My main focus has always been people. The way they express themselves and mimicry and gestures, their acts of kindness, and the flaws they exhibit - all it's fascinating and interesting for me. Afterwards, it's just an issue of time, a couple of pencils and a few watercolours to get into and bring life to the everyday images in a paper."
