The four Stages of the Automatic Drawings Process - Ideas

Mar 16, 2022

What is the way that great automated drawing artists generate ideas when they are creating? What steps do they take they take in their process of creation that allow the ideas to come to life? Disconnecting from the constant flow of ideas and distractions is an essential part of the technique for automatic drawing:

Put yourself in a receptive mindset, draw without thinking, and avoid having control of the image. The pencil should be in the same place on paper will help the flow. Automated drawing can be described as accelerated or intensified doodling in which a variety of unexpected and improbable images can be made to emerge and serve as the basis of further visual play.

Araki Koman is a professional illustrator living within the UK. As a child, she used to draw automatic up until her teenage years, and after that, she stopped drawing for around 10 years. She took an art and design program when she quit her position as a digital marketer. From then on, Araki has allowed intuition to lead her career and creativity process.

Examples of automatic drawing: earthy colours, raw lines, and organic forms

Soft raw lines and organic shapes, matte texture and sand-like hues are fused with sand-like colours in Araki Koman's automated drawings. The artist is currently working on a black ink Raw Feminine series she started in the year 2020. Take a look at the following automatic drawing illustrations:

Araki regarding her auto-drawing method:

To be honest the way I work is completely automatic. If I'm working on a project, a commission, I know where it is supposed to go. I know what the client wants. I am always confident in the process and know that it would eventually lead to the final result that we all like. Sometimes , I'll have a reference but then I give that reference to the process and let the process lead to the end result. (...) When I see my previous drawings I don't know how to draw them again, and I'm not sure like I'm actually making these drawings. Sure, my hands are drawing but it's my hand doing it , but I'm very spiritual and believe that there is a higher power that is doing the drawing through me.

The four stages of drawing automatically by Araki Koman:

Stage 1: The preparation

"Usually, I start with an image of a reference that I love. I draw an element and in the end the drawing isn't me who is doing the drawing any more, it is literally my hands doing the shapes. It's like a puzzle, things are happening on their own, and I am watching it."

Stage 2 Stage 2: Creation

"I love listening to podcast or listening to music while drawing, to focus my attention on something else. It is necessary to remove my attention from the drawing process and focus on something else such as the music I'm listening to or the dialogue of the podcasts. I am just allowing my hands to do everything by themselves."

Stage 3. Editing

"All editing happens by itself. While I edit I'm continuing to work on the editing process, but not fully present. Sometimes, I must close what I am doing by taking a break from my work, go do something else and then return to review the outcome. Do you think it's the best result? Are I satisfied with the result Do I need to add some other thing that hasn't come the first time? A lot of times the process is very easy and I'm completely detached from what's happening around me. The majority of my time is spent letting go 10 percent of the research, and 10% of editing in the final."

Stage 4: Verification

"When I see my automatic drawings from the past I never know what to do next but I'm not feeling that I am actually doing the drawings. It's not my hands making drawings, but I'm drawing, but I am highly spiritual, and I think it's a higher-level consciousness working through me. I guess I had an initial talent that led me to draw quite a bit in my early years. I was very drawn to drawing and I'm sure it's my duty to draw in this particular moment, specifically in this area, and embrace the task as my own."

If you are an artist, Make a video of your creation process

One of the best ways to earn some additional money from your art is to show others the process you followed in your artwork. Just turn your camera on and record how you make the artwork. You can make a short video of your work and sell the course online through a platform for video to feed your audience with some special BTS material.

A short video course is the perfect way to get your viewers while creating your artwork and earn money to do it. Course creators generally set the price of video short courses that range from $10-$50. The amount you earn depends on how you rate your online course as well as its worth to others. If you put your heart into creating the video and promoting it on social mediaplatforms, you could earn an extra passive income on each of your art pieces by showing people how you created the video.
