The Best Place to Invest in a downturn

I always thought I was intelligent.

I am listening to a friend of mine earlier in the day. We're both on a team together and there was a question being asked to all: "If you were handed $100 million dollars today What would you do?" It was just a simple exercise in thinking without constraints.

In the end, I believed I was slick.

I told myself, "I'd invest it and make a life from the dividends". It was a pretty decent solution, I believed. However, my teacher followed me. As soon as he gave his answer I was sure he was right. This was one of those "duh" moment. Anyway, he followed on to my response and stated:

"Yeah I'd like to invest in it in my business, but I'd put it in MY company."

Forehead slap. "Duh!"

I'm sure of it. The best investment, recession or no, is within yourself. You control the investment and have input into. Instead of passively dumping the funds into mutual funds or a stock you won't watch all that close and have no control over.

Your return will always be higher.

Because you're truly "invested".

Not that stocks and mutual funds aren't a good way to diversify however for those who are an online business proprietor wondering what you can do as we potentially head towards another downturn... my guideline from my mentor is as relevant as it has ever been.

Make a commitment to your future.

Of course, how you accomplish this is also important.

That's one of the reasons we entered the membership game over 13 years ago. That's the reason we have a technology company built around memberships. This is why we urge online business owners to add the membership option to their income mix.

It's a game changer.

It eases the pressure that goes the running of an online business. For most models of business, you're starting from scratch every month. If you offer online-based courses, for instance it starts with zero courses sold each month. And, if you want to reach your goal, you have offer all of those units again, to new customers.

With membership it doesn't mean you start from the beginning with nothing.

Sure, members must renew... but some don't. However, even if you have the equivalent of $100 per month in monthly revenue from your membership, that's better than zero. Additionally, you'ren't just selling new customers. You'll want to add new members to increase your profits, but most of your earnings come through renewals.

That's existing members simply keeping their subscription.

It's been said that you've heard about, don't you? It's about 6-7 times more difficult to convince an individual customer as it is to convince a repeat one. Membership can take that concept up to the limit. As time passes it is possible to increase the "floor" of earning between $100 and $500 or $1000 to $5,000, and beyond.

In any case, I'm painfully biased because I work at a company which sells membership software yet, like I mentioned... there's an explanation for why we developed the software we did. It's the reason why we're in the business we're in. We all genuinely believe in the value of membership, as we've watched it change individuals' lives repeatedly.

But, it's up to you.

A few things to think about as you navigate some potential coming turbulent times.

For membership specifically when you join, the earlier you get started the better.
