The self-help industry is widespread all over the globe, and one could imagine it's all over the place. It's as if our insatiable need to improve our minds and bodies, our careers, and relationships through endless tips and tricks are somehow an essential part of what it is to be human. In reality, there are billions to be made by tapping into this flaw and grave consequences for those people who are enticed by this illusions.

In this week's Staff Pick Premiere, "You've Never Been Completely sincere." director Joey Izzo explores a dark time in the self-help market with an unpublished audio interview that features Gene Church, a participant in a leader's course that ran for 4 days, which was arranged by the company he worked for Holiday Magic Inc in 1970 California.

Offering promises of job advancement, Church and his colleagues engaged in a shady programme which quickly turned violent and emotionally violent. Yet, none of them stopped - they continued and participated.

Church's interview is harrowing but Izzo's talent lies in discovering ways to engage audiences with bold animations and using 16mm reenactments so that they are aware of the actual fact occur. The inspiration for this is

"I was raised in the Bay Area, so self help seminars and personal education were all over the place. My parents were involved in the same way I can remember being fascinated with those giant binders of self-help cassettes as along with the numerous books. Ten years ago, when I was first introduced to Gene Church's book , 'The Pit An Group Encounter that's Defiled The Pit,' I found myself amazed to learn that I had discovered an intriguing source that had uncovered a number aspects of the alleged story of the self help business. The brutality and abuse that was the basis of the industry was exposed with shocking clarity, and took me on a journey down an unending journey of self help research  and continues to be a constant source of information."

The Self-Help sector:

     "I find that a lot of people don't see the self help industry as a trend. It certainly wasn't for me before it began. Many people believe that there are many firms that existed at various times over many generations. If you've done some research into these various companies you may think there are a few bad apples, however, in reality, everyone is working on the basis of faith in their work and are willing to assist those who need help. Gene's experience added layers of financial corruption and the systemic corruption that has been a part of this falsehood.

     The industry of self-help grew from door-to-door salesmen as well as pyramid schemers. It was similar to the business Gene worked for during the time. Holiday Magic Inc.
