Staff Chooses the Premiere "You've Never Been Tru" Written by Joey Izzo |
The self-help industry is widespread all over the globe, and one could imagine it's all over the place. It's as if our insatiable need to improve our minds and bodies, our careers, and relationships through endless tips and tricks are somehow an essential part of what it is to be human. In reality, there are billions to be made by tapping into this flaw and grave consequences for those people who are enticed by this illusions.
In this week's Staff Pick Premiere, "You've Never Been Completely sincere." director Joey Izzo explores a dark time in the self-help market with an unpublished audio interview that features Gene Church, a participant in a leader's course that ran for 4 days, which was arranged by the company he worked for Holiday Magic Inc in 1970 California.
Offering promises of job advancement, Church and his colleagues engaged in a shady programme which quickly turned violent and emotionally violent. Yet, none of them stopped - they continued and participated.
Church's interview is harrowing but Izzo's talent lies in discovering ways to engage audiences with bold animations and using 16mm reenactments so that they are aware of the actual fact occur. Like Izzo notes, nailing the hybrid style required a meticulous balance "It is not difficult to produce an edge-lord-y style short that could take on every element of violence. However, people would just turn away from the truth of the story told by Gene. Thus, I set out to find a balance which straddles the lines to keeps the audience engaged while keeping viewers on the edge till the end."
We had a conversation with Izzo before the release to learn more about the film, what was the catalyst for him going down this journey, and the benefits was gained from the experience. Learn more about his informative answer.

The inspiration for this is
"I was raised in the Bay Area, so self help seminars and personal education were all over the place. My parents were involved in the same way I can remember being fascinated with those giant binders of self-help cassettes as along with the numerous books. Ten years ago, when I was first introduced to Gene Church's book , 'The Pit An Group Encounter that's Defiled The Pit,' I found myself amazed to learn that I had discovered an intriguing source that had uncovered a number aspects of the alleged story of the self help business. The brutality and abuse that was the basis of the industry was exposed with shocking clarity, and took me on a journey down an unending journey of self help research and continues to be a constant source of information."
The Self-Help sector:
"I find that a lot of people don't see the self help industry as a trend. It certainly wasn't for me before it began. Many people believe that there are many firms that existed at various times over many generations. If you've done some research into these various companies you may think there are a few bad apples, however, in reality, everyone is working on the basis of faith in their work and are willing to assist those who need help. Gene's experience added layers of financial corruption and the systemic corruption that has been a part of this falsehood.
The industry of self-help grew from door-to-door salesmen as well as pyramid schemers. It was similar to the business Gene worked for during the time. Holiday Magic Inc. The movement for self-help was created by the same criminals disguised under the guise of New Age philosophy and the expanding Human Potential Movement. However, beneath the hype there's a rogue method that is shaped in an outline of... Let's imagine that, as an example, it's an equilateral triangle. "

HTML0 In the sketch of the Leadership Dynamics Institute:
"Think about it this way: Think of the situation this way you're an employee working within a stressful work environment. Everyone around you appears to be striving to make the next sale and become successful. One of your colleagues recently got an outstanding promotion, and seems to have leveled up all the way. They tell you that the only method they can get to their current level is to enroll in the life-changing, personal development course known as Leadership Dynamics Institute (whispered into your ear). ).
Each executive in your company has a role to play, which includes your colleague. It's costly and your colleague can't reveal exactly what transpired through the entire course. But, it's sure to bring good outcomes. As it turns out, the next class is happening in two weeks. Do you want to sign up for the course?
It's simple to determine the reasons why individuals initially agreed to participate in the course. The majority of people are or at the very least, intrigued by this offer. As the short clarifies, the participants didn't even know of the violent and violent character of the program until they had completed the program and traveled around the country and paid the enormous non-refundable cost, signed the waiver, given away all of the personal belongings that they owned and being naked and naked in the conference rooms of a hotel. The first time, they were not aware but were then astonished and totally attracted. As the violence starts the pressure of peers and fear can go quite a ways in keeping you at the scene.
There are some brave men who have approached me following screenings and have said that they'd never fall for it and they had left as soon as the films were announced. Every time I smile, I say"Oh, yeah, that's the guy I've sought out.' No matter what you think you'd do in this circumstance, I'm just doubtful that we know for sure. Based on Gene It's very likely you'd be there and participated exactly like the others did. "
The difficulties in making the movie
"We produced this film at the peak of COVID in Los Angeles, January 2021. This was a lot of difficult, including the requirement to shoot more than 70 photos using 16mm film on one day. I was a bit nervous heading into the shoot but we prepared extremely well and we were able to secure everyone and secure all the equipment needed and much more. "

HTML0 In the coming A24 series:
"A24, Brain Dead, and I are developing a docu-series that will extend the concept of the documentary, and chronicle the whole development of the self-help business. It's difficult to go into too much depth, because we're in the process of shaping our narrative and discovering new developments each and every day. But I can say that the short film depicts the beginnings of a destructive concept and financial plan which has evolved and expanded throughout the past 80 years.
The dangers of the personal development/self-help industry whether mental, physical or financial, abound even to this day. Similar struggles from the early types of self-help are still operating and co-mingle with new participants every year. However, the omnipresence of these ideologies and use of language is extremely disturbing. The low level of its all-encompassing and widespread existence in our everyday lives that's in some ways the most damaging. I'm hoping to provide a historical interlocking narrative that will reveal the devastating culture-based force that impacts all of us. Through this show, we'd like to expose this dark story accessible to the public for the first time. "
On lessons learned:
"It's taught me to put less stress on how I see things. It's all about changing our thinking and patterns of thought to block negativity out. Through my study I've observed that the methods which claim to eliminate negative thoughts patterns to be highly dubious or fraudulent. These methods can, in addition, trigger create tension within you. Therefore, take it easy on yourself! "
On best advice for aspiring filmmakers:
"Try something new Keep following your curiosity. There's no need for more (blank). The work has been done and there's plenty of industry filmmakers already looking to replicate last year's whatever . "
