Nicole Mueller is an artist from San Francisco. Her artwork includes large-scale works installation, murals, and murals that mimic the effects of stained glass. Motivated by processes the abstract pieces are highly saturated, built by layers of collage-like forms. Her work explores the complexity of color, the state of change, the dichotomies that exist within painting, the change of existence, as well as the threshold between outside and inside, both tangible and intangible.

About my background

I'm mostly a painter living and working full-time as artist in San Francisco, California.

My professional experience includes painting murals, installation work, as well as being involved in the field of arts administration and professional development.

I was a student in the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, where I lived for many years prior to moving to West Coast.

Another big part of my mission and work involves co-hosting Beyond the Studio with my fellow artist Amanda Adams, a podcast designed to promote visibility in the world of art by conducting interviews with contemporary artists about their career paths.

About my style

My work is mostly intuitive that is driven by process. abstract, extremely saturated, made of color and layers of collage-like patterns.

I make large-scale paintings with light-activated glass installations to mimic the visual effects of stained glass and murals. In this project I'm exploring dichotomies and changes in state, the line between the interior and exterior, the tangible and intangible.

What is the secret to creating my art

I believe that being consistent in your attendance at your job is crucial. For me creating a practice in the studio as well as setting goals for myself to continue moving forward allowed me to focus on my tasks whenever life gets in the way. Also, knowing when to step back and rest or take breaks (for a day up to a month or even longer).
