That's why we reached out to Funk Roberts, a well-known online fitness coach and a frequent member advocate. He was happy to talk about the methods that helped him increase retention, engagement and even revenue.
Here are the strategies Funk Robert shared with us.
1. The 'Shared Rituals' strategy
Shared rituals are consistent routine activities that members participate in regularly which creates a feeling of belonging and community. These rituals are like glue--they help keep members returning and help them feel more connected to your membership.
The main benefits of this method include:
- Develops a solid community culture
- Encourages regular engagement and participation
- Retention and loyalty of members is increased.
What do you think this will look like in practice?
I run a membership program known as " Over 40 Alpha." It is a health and fitness membership for men over 40, 50, 60, and above. I run several shared rituals for this membership program, which help keep members dedicated to their goals as well as the group.
- sweaty selfies: Members post pictures after every workout, sharing their dedication and inspiring others to join in.
- Alpha Meal posts Photos posted by members of their meals, breaking them into macro parts to foster accountability and educate members of the community.
- Birthday Burpees: On their birthdays, the members record themselves doing burpees corresponding to their years of age. It's fun, challenging, and brings joy within the local group.
How do you create these shared rituals for your members?
- Find the key behaviors or activities that align with your Tribe's members' objectives.
- Use easy-to-follow prompts and hashtags that encourage involvement.
- Make sure to include these steps in the onboarding material to set expectations from the start.
By incorporating these shared rituals to create a lively, engaging environment that participants won't be able to quit.
2. The technique of 'Identity Crafting'
The art of understanding your market's target customers isn't just about being aware of their demographics. It's all about understanding their needs, desires goals, challenges, and hopes. They don't simply want to buy a item or service, they are looking to join an organization that is bigger than them.
If you can create a distinct and strong image for your community, you'll give participants the sense of belonging and satisfaction in the person they're becoming by participating in the program you've created.
People want to join a community, they wanna feel seen and understood. And they wanna feel part of something greater than themselves.
The benefits from this method are:
- Develops a sense of belonging
- It differentiates your membership from other members
- Promotes deeper engagement and loyalty
With the Over 40 Alpha program it isn't about joining a fitness program but turning into Over 40 Alphas. The Over 40 Alpha identity symbolizes determination, strength, and transformation. Everything, from the rituals to the culture is a sign of that identity which makes it a badge of honor.
What can you do to ensure that an identical feeling among your staff members?
- Define a unique image that resonates with the aspirations of your target audience.
- Incorporate this identity into your content, rituals and your communications.
- Continuously reinforce this identity through stories, testimonials, and community interactions.
If members adopt an identity and brand new look that is in line with their objectives They become more engaged in the community, increasing retention.
The Insider Language Method
Every tribe that is successful uses its own language, an unspoken handshake that distinguishes insiders from the outside world. The creation of unique words, slogans, or even hand signals that only your community uses could create a strong sense of belonging and exclusivity. This insider language helps build a unique and hard-to-replicate culture.
The main benefits from this technique include:
- It creates an impression of exclusivity and insider position.
- Community bonds are strengthened.
- Encourages long-term retention by making people feel a as if they are part of something unique.
In Over 40 Alpha there are members with phrases like:
- GID (Get It Done! ) GID (Get It Done!) is our rallying call that reinforces our commitment to action and determination.
- "Smell The Rose": A reminder to take a slow, deep breath and take in the experience.
They're more than just catchy slogans; they are a aspect of the tribe's DNA. They create a culture where the members feel that they're apart of something that is unique and distinctive, and want to be a part of.
How do you get this to happen to your employees:
- Create unique terms or phrases that represent your community's beliefs and goals.
- Make sure to use these terms in all of your platform, emails, and your events.
- Encourage members to take these ideas and apply them in their posts and interactions.
The creation of a common language creates a sense of community that people are proud to be part of. This is directly affecting retention.
4. The "Transformation Journey" Framework
One of the most efficient strategies to improve retention is to guide members through the process of transformation with clear milestones, incentives and support from the community. The motivation for them is to continue their journey within your membership.
A few of the main advantages of this framework include:
- Helps keep members engaged and motivated.
- It provides a clearly defined path for you to follow, helping reduce overwhelm and confusion.
- Encourages continuous membership renewal.
How to implement the technology: Craft a path which leads to change, in which each member begins from a predetermined point and is guided towards their goals, by your assistance each step.
This is what I'm doing for my program:
- Milestones Create signposts throughout the journey to mark your progress (for instance, the Milestone T-shirts, which participants of Over 40 Alpha Over 40 Alpha program earn at the end of each phase of the "One Year To Alpha" journey).
- Incentive Programs: Reward achievements to inspire the next step.
- Community support ensure that everyone walks along this road without support by encouraging a sense of support and encouragement.
What can you do to implement this structure for your employees:
- Draw out a clearly defined and step-by-step plan for a member's change.
- Set up meaningful milestones which are recognized with reward points.
- Ensure continuous community support through group challenges, check-ins, and a sense of encouragement.
Implementing a transformation journey framework creates a compelling reason for participants to remain. The members are constantly moving towards an agreed-upon goal, and receive tangible benefits.

"We've tried a couple of other membership tools that came as part of the packages we'd opted to invest in. But there's nothing that can beat Member. There's certainly plenty of amazing stuff out there that people have been building over the years. However, when it comes to customization, if you use WordPress it's impossible to do this. Of course, I'm bias, but we've made millions through this product."
