Motion and space in illustration The CreativeMindClass Blog

Mar 16, 2022

Since I was a kid I've always loved drawing, paint, and play with my hands. This has always been the most natural way to express myself. However, growing as a child in Taiwan and in Taiwan, having the art of making was often considered a snub, and I was often instructed by my parents to learn deeper into practical topics in order to avoid ending being hungry on the streets.

Fortunately, my Mom has always encouraged me to do whatever I desired and has done everything that she could to help to achieve my dreams. Following my return to America, United States and graduating high school, I decided that I want to make art a career.

I was accepted into ArtCenter College of design, studying Illustration with the intention of going to the field of feature animation. However, along the way I discovered motion graphics and fell in love with its versatility and all the amazing work that is produced by the people I admire.

How would you describe the style you prefer?

The process is still in the road to discovering a style that I can confidently identify as my personal. I am prone to want to try different things from time to time... One month I'll feel like doing something very vibrant, and then I'll experiment with the more natural-looking colors. I'll be really into a shape car style for a few months but then one day I'll be tired of it and will want to explore an approach that is based on forms.

Or sometimes I'll try to blend two different things that are intriguing to me, to make it seem like I'm in a never-ending journey to explore and gain knowledge. After fumbling a in a few places I'm starting to realize there are some designs, colours, or compositions I'm attracted to. Maybe this is the start of a design style?

This is part of the reason why I love being at Oddfellows and sometimes, I can't believe I am fortunate enough to be working with a team of insanely talented people. At work we often have to adapt to different styles from project to project, virtually every project has to be completed in different styles, and I'm constantly discovering new information from my coworkers every day.

What is the key to making your illustrations?

I enjoy drawing illustrations on subjects that I am curious or interested in. I then attempt to make my own interpretation of the subject.

But most importantly I like to have fun. It is my opinion that having fun is key to making anything that viewers are able to see if a creator had fun making some thing... that extra sparkle.

As I was battling the pandemic, watching my colleagues and our studio trying their best to help the community In the end, I decided to create a Patreon named Joy&Frens which gives 50% of the net revenue goes to charity chosen by my patrons. On it, I share Tips & Tricks, process videos, ask friends to join me for collaborations and share their wisdom.

I also show my work through Instagram and on my site.
