From the time when she was just a child, New Zealand-based maximalist designer and artist Evie Kemp enjoyed art and design. "I used to draw all the time or redesigning my dollhouse or watching the room transformations on the television." Later, in her teens, Evie says, "I was very frightened of being different, and was willing to do anything to avoid standing out."
That urge to fit in was what led her to law school. But when she was studying law, "my mental health became bad," Evie says, "and I had to take the time off for six months. In that time, as I began to recover I refocused my efforts on finding out what I really did love, and decided to apply to study graphic design rather than." Returning to her early passion for art changed her life. "It was in that way that I started to really discover my own voice--and embrace my quirks that I'd put down for a long time."
Within the fifteen years that have passed since taking that step to concentrate on developing her skills in a career she's passionate about. Evie's self-confidence and her artistic voice has allowed her to build her own business. "I discover more and more that I'm more confident and vibrant and imaginative than I've ever been," she says. "It's similar to the old "Which was first: the chicken or the egg question: I don't know if I get more confident and comfortable with myself the more my work exudes enthusiasm and vibrant, or if it's actually reversed. I'd never say my style is "developed," but I'm sure it's evolving."
