We're thrilled to have joined our 20-year tradition of providing the chance for small and new businesses from all over the world to stand out and succeed. Marcy Lab School Marcy Lab School is an independent non-profit organisation that is located within Brooklyn, New York, which aims to provide students with the best educational opportunities for postsecondary students to guide students to be successful and productive in their jobs in the field of technology.
We made this donation of $100,000 to The Marcy Lab School as a part of our 2020 commitment for organizations that are working to narrow the gap in racial equality.
We talked to The Marcy Laboratory School's executive director Reuben Ogbonna II, about how the school can create opportunities for Fellows to build their abilities and find jobs in the area of technology. However, they are not having a degree that runs for a period of four years.
: Marcy Lab is a very new company, why did you decide to start this non-profit?
Reuben Ogbonna II: After spending 14 years serving students of color--along with my co-founder Maya Bhattacharjee-Marcantonio--in the charter and public school systems, we repeatedly watched as our former students with limitless potential slipped through the cracks of higher education. The thing that is not discussed on the news regarding the college education within America United States is the fact that each year many talented, diligent and gifted students are accepted into the college they've always wanted to attend, yet do not have the financial means to pay for tuition fees or to stay until they've completed their studies. We were astonished by the shocking failure rate in the case of "college promises" that caused these students and their families with facing a debt load that is unsustainable, as well as other unsolvable issues.
We created and run Marcy Lab out of the idea that youth that are colored are not as fortunate are disadvantaged, and the fact that each of our child should be entitled to a better and more equitable chance in addition to opportunities restricted to those who completed the 4-year college. Marcy Lab School Marcy Lab School is a unique educational option that can be redesigned, and was founded on the notion that it could provide lifetime opportunities in the economy as well as mobility to youngsters who are looking to pursue a career in technology.
SQSP is considered to be a feasible alternative to the 4-year college diploma for other students. The main reason is why you should be aware of the fact that Marcy Lab offers this path to a career?
ROThe issues I witnessed my students face in real-time were some of the greatest obstacles for kids who are of different ethnicities. There was no doubt that the educational system was failing to deliver what colleges say young people are looking for regarding interpersonal interaction, motivation academic relevance and the capability to align with not only an industry but also an chance to participate in the shaping of the next generation. It's the finely crafted blend of these elements that make Marcy Lab's core. Marcy Lab and are some crucial aspects to help the young adults build confidence in their decision to take an alternative path.
In order to remain true to our commitments, we make sure that Fellows are prepared to enter working after 12 months of training and also possess the skills needed to bring their skills to teams working at high speed and can add value to the team from early with. Fellows learn technical abilities as they complete an industry-specific educated curriculum that is flexible and flexible to changing technology needs. Alongside gaining a solid technical foundation, our fellows take part in the Leadership & Development curriculum, which is focused on forming racial identities, gender equity for the advancement of careers as well as financial literacy. The curriculum includes works by famous authors like James Baldwin, Michelle Alexander, Safiya Umoja Noble, as well as the late Dr. Beverly Tatum.
We're excited to report the fact that Marcy Lab School graduates are seeking jobs and earning higher wages, which were previously only available to those who are among the most prestigious institutions for the past four years. This is a double-win we're not just being able to see our fellow students as well as their families forced into circumstances of financial stability however, it also indicates that employers are radically changing their hiring methods to be accommodating and attract individuals who don't fit into the traditional mold.
SQSP: Are you willing to share more information about the impact that you've observed the impact on the students from Marcy Lab School Marcy Lab School will have on the students who take the program?
ROEven after five years working on the field, and observing the results and results, I'm convinced that it's quite a leap forward to see our kids get jobs with an average $188,000 per year at ages 19 and 20 working for one of the most internationally highly competitive companies and not having loans. The young workers work alongside teams from companies such as The New York Times, JPMorgan, Cockroach Labs, Spotify as well as many others, increase their earnings to around $75,000 per year. The company also allows them to support their communities through buying houses, helping the employees' families and also aiding their families.
However, prior to when our friends and colleagues can join the workforce as employees, we see them grow, transform and evolve by pushing them further than previously in pursuit of goals and gaining confidence to see the value they bring in each and every location they visit. Every day, they become more enthusiastic and motivated to make a difference beyond the borders of Marcy as well as their workplaces. In collaboration with their instructors and classmates who're always updated with the most recent information about their abilities as well as their knowledge and abilities will allow them the ability to eradicate the outdated ways of oppression by using their own experiences and experience to develop instruments that will promote equality for everyone and also make modifications to society.
SQSP: What's the impact of technology in the overall development in the overall success of Marcy Lab? Marcy Lab program and its co-workers, not just with in relation to the subject but also in the sense of controlling the course?
ROOur technologically-based course's success is based on our strong relationship with our employer partners for continuous feedback regarding Fellows' technical and professional capabilities. The areas that need improvement require immediate attention are referred to our instructors, who ensure the quality of our content is adjusted to meet the ever-changing requirements of recruitment and performance on the job.
The alignment between education and the performance of students can be a trigger for creating new alliances with hiring businesses which recognize that such intimate connections could be the basis for achieving better or equivalent outcomes in hiring. The highlights of this include:
Collaboration with established companies in order to eliminate the requirements of a certain degree for developers. It's the case for New York Times and . These companies are now recruiting our Fellows, as well as others that aren't traditionally employed.
We have developed a new Capstone course of study has been a collaboration and J.P. Morgan Chase Asset and Wealth Management that is the leading authority in the area of data engineering as well as back-end systems. We have designed the course taught in our capstone class so that we can meet the needs of their clients and prepare our students for the growing growth in analytics based on information.
SQSP What do you think of Marcy's dream? Lab School's the future?
ROWhat can I do to remain positive about the future of Marcy Lab Marcy Lab as well as the future potential in this field? where we are witnessing the transformation happening in the world of business. Companies are shifting their attention towards the need for qualifications and instead focusing on recruiting based on their skills which has created a chance for businesses such as Marcy Lab to even exist.
I am seeing major employers all over the country such as IBM and Barclays and partners like those, with an abundance of mid-career and early-career professionals and the top management who graduated from Marcy Lab School. Marcy Lab School, similar to the Stanford pipeline which is utilized for businesses located in that part in the San Francisco Bay Area. While they learn as they work for high-end companies, I've seen those who graduate eventually start their own business and reap dividends through hiring teams who have had the same experiences similar to their own.
In the end, I view Marcy Lab as a part in a wider network of pathways for equitable development specifically designed for helping to propel a multitude of children who succeed in schools of color into positions that end this cycle within the course of one generation.
