Installation and painting - The CreativeMindClass Blog

Nicole Mueller is an artist from San Francisco. Her work includes large-scale paintings, murals, and installations inspired by the look that stained glass can produce. Inspiring by the process these abstract paintings are highly saturated, built with layers of collage-like shapes. Her art explores the variety of color, states of change, the dichotomies that exist within painting, the fundamental transition of existence, as well as the transition between the outside and inside, the tangible and intangible.

My background

I'm primarily a painter who is a full-time artist in San Francisco, California.

My background also includes mural painting, installation work, as well as working in the field of arts administration and professional development.

I was a student in The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, where I lived for many years before making the move towards the west coast.

A large portion of my work and mission involves co-hosting Beyond the Studio with co-artist Amanda Adams, a podcast that aims to increase visibility in the world of art by conducting interviews with modern artists on their professional paths.

My personal fashion

The majority of my work has been intuitive that is driven by process. abstract, extremely saturated, made of color and layers of collage-like shapes.

I make large-scale paintings with light-activated glass installations which mimic the effect of stained glass as well as murals. Through this series I'm exploring dichotomies and changes in state, the threshold between outside and inside, the tangible and the intangible.

What is the secret to creating my work

I'm of the opinion that being consistent in your attendance for your work is key--for me making a habit of studio work and setting myself goals to keep moving forward has helped me prioritize my tasks when life gets in the way, as well as being aware of when I should step back to rest or even take breaks (for a day, a month, or even for a longer period of time).
