Illustrations that incorporate movement and space The CreativeMindClass Blog

Aug 6, 2022

From the time as a young child I've been drawn to paint, and work with my hands. It was and always has been the most natural way for me to express my feelings. Growing up in Taiwan the pursuit of the art of making was often thought of as a negative thing, and I was often advised by parents to take classes in more practical subjects otherwise I'd end up starving on the streets.

It is a blessing that my mom has always encouraged my pursuit of anything I wanted to do and was willing to do everything that she could to help me reach my objectives. After coming back in the United States and graduating high school, I made the decision that I would like to go after art as an occupation.

I was accepted to ArtCenter College of design, studying Illustration with the intention of going into the feature animation field. Along the way, I came across motion graphics and fell in love with its versatility , as well as the incredible work created by people I greatly admire.

What would you say about your personal style?

The process is still in the road to discovering a fashion that I'm able to call my personal. I am prone to be drawn to trying different things from time to time... One month, I'll be drawn to doing very colorful things, soon I'll want to experiment with organic colors. find myself enthralled by a particular shape car style for a few months and then, in the next day, I'll be tired of it and want to try a style that's inspired by forms.

In other instances, I'll blend two different things that seem fascinating to me as if I'm on an endless quest to discover and learn. After fumbling a bit here and there I'm starting to realize that there are certain shapes, colors, compositions that I am drawn to. Perhaps it's the beginning of a design style?

It's one of the reasons I enjoy being at Oddfellows and sometimes, I can't believe I am fortunate to be part of an amazing group of people. We are required to adapt to different styles for each project. virtually every project has to be completed with different ways as well as I'm discovering new information from my colleagues every day.

What are the most important things to consider when making your illustrations?

I love to draw illustrations on subjects that interest me or am interested in and then make my own interpretation of it.

However, my main goal is to have enjoyable. I think having fun is the most important factor in creating anything and viewers will be able to tell if a creator had enjoyment performing something... it adds sparkle.

In the midst of the pandemic, seeing our studio and my peers doing their best in helping the world, I was inspired to create a Patreon named Joy&Frens which gives 50% of the net earnings go to the charities of my patrons choice. There, I post Tips & Tricks, process videos, and invite my friends to collaborations and offer their expertise.

My work can also be seen my work on Instagram and on my web site.
