Abstract geometric and graphic illustrations: imaginary drawings deeply rooted in graffiti by Marc David Spengler

A fundamental part in the process of making geometric designs is anticipating of undetermined outcome. Marc insists that each shape and each colour will trigger an emotional reaction in those shapes and colours already drawn. Optic illusions, false shadows changing from flatness to spatiality, seemingly simple details - when presented at Ampersand Gallery in Portland last year, they mesmerised the viewer.

"My Name is Marc David Spengler, I'm 25 years old I live in the suburbs of Stuttgart, Germany. Since the age of a youngster, I've enjoyed drawing a lot. I remember when I was in fifth year, I wrote my dream job was to become a car artist. Then in my 12th grade year, I discovered the world of graffiti, which has been a huge inspirational source for me from the beginning.

Why do artists use geometric forms?

I'm no longer an artist creating real graffiti in the present however I'm still observing geometric shapes every day through magazines, social media and even books. After I graduated from school in 2014, I started learning about communication design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, where I'm still taking classes today under the tutelage of Patrick Thomas.

In addition to my academics, I'm working on exhibitions along with brand collaborations as well as my sketchbooks. With regards to my illustration style I'm working mostly with abstract geometric shapes and vibrant colour palettes that attempt to blend into an undefined frame. My goal for every composition I'm creating is to bring harmony.

How to do geometric art?

For creating geometric art I don't have draw with pencil beforehand which is why a large portion of my drawings are imaginary. I like to start working on the outside by drawing a background silhouette, before imagining what might be happening in the interior. Therefore, I'm always reacting to the shapes I've drawn previously and this makes the process intriguing for me as I also don't know how it's going to look like at the end.

I prefer making small geometric drawings because they give me greater control over the overall composition. I also try not to overdo it with excessive elements. While drawing, I like to play with the given parameterslike creating an unrealistic shadow or creating an optical illusion because everything is possible within the 2-dimensional realm."
