Celebrating History, Embracing Progress: International Women's Day 2024

Mar 14, 2024

Each year, on the 8th of March all of humanity comes together for the celebration of International Women's Day (IWD). It's a day to acknowledge the incredible achievements of women, reflect on the obstacles they face, and recommit ourselves to building a future where equality truly reigns. We know that this day didn't blossom in a flash. It's the culmination of struggle, determination and unwavering commitment. We celebrate this day and encourage you to as well as we go on an enlightening journey through the rich history of IWD which is a proof of the force of action by the entire community.

From Seeds of Change to a Global Movement

The seeds for IWD were sown in the early 20th century, a time where the struggle for women's rights gained momentum. On the 8th of March in 1857, female workers marched in protest of poor working conditions and subpar conditions for women working in the industries of textile. This protest called for the reduction of working hours as well as fair and reasonable living wage. Years later in 1908 on the 8th of March an organized march by female workers in the needle trades took place to protest child labor, the conditions of work in sweatshops and to demand that women be able to vote. A year later, in 1910 the 8th of March was made a day to be observed in the year of International Women's Day.

The Catalyst to Change

Through the 20th century IWD became a significant agent of transformation. It was a forum for women to raise their voice on topics such as the right to vote, fair work conditions and wages, as well as access to education. In 1975 IWD was recognized by IWD was recognized by the United Nations officially recognized IWD which affirmed the global importance of IWD.

A Day of Celebration and Action

Presently, IWD is celebrated in many ways, from inspiring marches to intimate gatherings. It's an opportunity to honor outstanding women from every field including artists and scientists to entrepreneurs and activists. It's important to remember that IWD is not just about celebrating, it's also a call to action. It highlights that the struggle for equality between genders is far from over. It is imperative to continue to fight for equal opportunities, challenge harmful stereotypes, and empower girls and women everywhere. The main theme of International Women's Day 2024 is " Invest in Women: Accelerating Progress" using the widely used hashtag #InvestInWomen..

Based on the UN Five areas are key to pushing ahead this hashtag until it becomes obsolete:

  • Investing in women, one of the human rights issues:Time is running out. Gender equality is the greatest human rights challenge, benefiting everyone.
  • Ending poverty: Because of the COVID outbreak and the conflict in the region over the last 75 million people are living in extreme poverty since 2020. It is imperative to take immediate action in order to stop more than 342 million girls and women who are living in poverty in 2030.
  • Financing that is gender-responsive: Conflicts and rising costs could cause 75% of the countries to decrease public spending until 2025. This will negatively impact women and the services they require.
  • Shifting to a green economy and care society:The present economic system significantly impacts women. The advocates advocate for a shift towards green economies and a care society that will increase the voices of women.
  • The support of feminist changemakers: Despite leading efforts women's organizations only receive 0.13% of official aid to development.

Beyond the Day

Although IWD is an important day for women, the quest for gender equality shouldn't be confined to one day. Since we're a business founded by inclusion and empowerment and equality, we aim to provide a space where women can flourish throughout the whole year. Whether it's fostering a culture that values respect and professional growth or supporting organizations promoting women's rights, we are committed to being a part in the solutions.

Let's all celebrate the stories of the past, embrace the achievements made and work towards a future where every woman has the opportunity to achieve the fullest potential she can. Take the time to select some of these activities to be part of this year:
