Get a mindset coach's advice and creator Becky Mollenkamp's tried-and-true strategies for growing an audience and not burning out.
Becky Mollenkamp is an expert in mindset coaching that helps people make the shift from 'small business owner' to CEO and create viable businesses that don't burn out. With her Gutsy Boss brand, she has helped thousands of clients to let go of the "shoulds and redefine success on their terms.
More than 20 years of experience as an entrepreneur -which included running an agency for content marketing that was six figures prior to launching her own coaching company in 2015 Becky learned what works best for her when it comes to gaining an following.
Today, three principles drive Becky's marketing:
There's no need to be following the latest trends in social media.
Make sure you choose long-term approaches over instant satisfaction
Make sure you are in harmony with your family and work to make sure your business lasts
1. There's no need to be following the latest trends in social media.
It seems like a new marketing trend pops up every day. Trying to keep up is a quick way towards feeling overwhelmed and diverted away from your goals. Becky is making her conscious choice to concentrate rather on strategies and channels that work for her.
Right now, that means moving away from social media sites that create more stress than results.
"I am really reaching the end of my rope with social media," she explains. "I've quit Facebook that's great. And Instagram isn't a place I'm spending long periods of time there."
Becky's principle of letting go of the 'shoulds', also applies to social media. This is especially in the case of doing too much at once.
"It is beginning to become a bit. It's time to start creating an account on TikTok, and then I'll need to make a separate Reel... with a picture along with video. Also, I need to come up with an idea that is thought-provoking for Twitter. And then I need to create something for Medium. The amount is too high," Becky describes.
"I think we are reaching this point of overwhelming as a species, and people are beginning to realize that they need to shift something.'"
Instead of creating something entirely new entirely from scratch for each platform, look for creative ways to utilize your previous work. You can, for instance, transform a YouTube video into shorter videos for TikTok as well as Instagram Reels. The video transcript can become the basis of a newsletter or blog posting.
What is it like how do you have the power toown your target audience? Your communication with them is via a channel or platform that you control, like an email newsletter, online community, or even your site.
Here's the way Becky discusses the importance of email for owning your audience.
2. Choose long-term strategies over instant pleasure
In the nearly two decades she has spent as an entrepreneur, Becky has a good idea of what strategies for marketing will work for her. She is now returning to those tried-and-true techniques -- even if they take a little bit longer to be repaid.
If you're building your business, it can be tempting to search for strategies that will pay dividends quickly. There's a tendency to be disappointed in the event that you do not see immediate outcomes, however the methods that take more time and effort in the beginning usually will result in stronger long-lasting connections with your audience.
The kind of work Becky does demands honesty and vulnerability for her clients. As such, they must be comfortable when they work with her prior to coaching. Consistent communication through her email newsletter helps establish that trust.
"Before people do one-on-one work with me, they typically have my email address for six months or a year," she explains. "I'm emailing them every week as well as allowing the clients to become acquainted with my personality. A small percentage of them invest in something smaller but, over several years, the clients who will be my personal clients finally invest [in coaching]."
The Gutsy Boss Podcast is yet another important element of Becky's game plan for the long term. "That's taken a long time to earn a profit," says Becky. "I've had my podcast for four years, and I'm just now starting to get where every month I'm having an increase in the number of people who listen to my podcast."

SEO refers to making your website, content, and products more accessible to users by using the search engines. Content that is optimized will show up more in the search results of appropriate words and terms. The more you optimize your content, the more easy it is for your target users to find it via searches.
Becky ran a content marketing agency prior to becoming an instructor as well as an SEO coach. SEO has been able to stand over time throughout her career.
"SEO is a tried and true strategy which works," she says. "SEO is a lengthy game, however it's an investment that yields dividends. Instead of creating something that only has a shelf life of two seconds, SEO can be an item that can go on for years."

Because she optimizes the blog's and web-based content to meet the needs of her particular audience in mind, potential clients can discover Becky's content via search. Once they do her blog, the content she has to offer and her unique insight keep them reading, listening as well as subscribing to her newsletter and frequently turning into clients.
"I was the only one who could answer that question because there wasn't someone other than me who answered the question this manner. If this was the final option they were able to come up with that question, then it's the one that resonated with them, which means I was answering with the manner they needed to hear it in order for them be inclined to collaborate together with me."
Finally, Becky finds herself networking (what she describes as is an "old traditional method to market") as well as using that network to connect with more prospective clients.
"Getting involved and talking with my existing network, engaging in old-fashioned networking in person for meeting new people... being able to get in front of others' audiences has proven very helpful, whether that's gatherings or just working with people," she says.
What do all these techniques for building audience the same? They aid Becky to maintain an enviable time-to-work balance, which has become more important as ever for artists over these past years.
3. Make sure you are in harmony with your family and work to build a lasting business
"It felt like, all of a sudden each business became an online company during the pandemic. And I think that caused a massive burnout" Becky recalls. "I'm experiencing it with several individuals: We're all exhausted from managing an online business."
Becky seeks out ways to expand her readership and her business, without jeopardizing her lifestyle that she's created and wants to continue to live a life she enjoys. "I am a mom, and I want to have a life. I do not want my life to be creating content all the time."
"How can I make the most effective choices to allow me to live my life, but also still grow my reach?"
Growth and productivity are wonderful, but not when they can be detrimental to your mental health.
"I want to think about the ways I can use my time the most efficiently, not because I want to get more done, but because I actually desire to lead a fulfilling life."
Don't be a slave to the "shoulds' and build the business that's right for you
Becky assists her clients in helping them develop businesses and not burn out. She says this is a result of her years of discovering that equilibrium for herself.
Her business has come a long way from her initial course that she launched in 2018. However, the core of her coaching in helping people let go of those 'shoulds' -- remains steadfast in her content, products as well as her own method of expansion.
