Riso Chan discusses being her authentic self through artwork:
My work is very emotionally charged. My work is based upon the emotions that I am experiencing. My life has always been one of an emotional person. As a child, I've had a feeling which constantly made me feel uncomfortable and I attempted to clear it out of my system. (...) If you become older and realise that you're not alone and that every person experiences their own unique. I decided to channel the emotions that I bring through my everyday life into paint. It's a method to stimulate my creativity and come up with new ideas. It's amazing that the thing I'd been trying to eliminate all day and then, suddenly, I put on a piece of paper and it felt like a huge relief. The paper is now an area where I can utilize this sensation, and am able to use my emotions as well as joys, sorrows and feelings to express them on the paper. It was an incredibly powerful moment that brought me into an attitude of gratitude. The experience began to resonate with many others also. It was a time where I was able to express my ideas on paper I'd have never considered prior to. As opposed to trying to become similar to other artists who have already "made their mark" I focused on what I wanted to say and who I am as an individual. I accepted something I did not like concerning myself and discovered my real power. I'm so happy to be my authentic and sensitive self.
