May 4, 2024

Jo Kelly isn't your average acting coach.

Actually, she doesn't use the phrase "teacher" in any way "I do the opposite of teaching people how to act" she says. "I assist people in not acting."

Through exercises that are experiential, Jo coaches mainly actors and other artists of every kind in addition to non-artist "seekers" in how to achieve inner freedom and to become their most authentic selves. By doing this, performers can stop acting and start acting and becoming. "I prefer to think of myself as an midwife rather than a coach, because I aid people to return to their true self and be reborn," she explains.

She believes that the performance of an actor lies in their ability and satisfaction to devote themselves to their character. "When the character is defended completely, the story is told and the public is affected," she explains.

In her unique style of guiding performing artists, she helps them to tap into their childlike fascination, curiosity, and play. The result? They give truthful, alive, and raw performance.

In the year 2016, Jo transitioned from in-person coaching to develop an online company through . Since, she's created three consecutive learning journeys and has provided over 8,000 individuals. Their students have experienced incredible successes since they worked with Jo and they have been able to land roles in some of the largest studios like Netflix, HBO, Disney, Showtime, ABC Studios, and more.

She conducted her own research

Jo had an unusual path into acting.

Born in Belgium Her birthplace was in Belgium. She completed her MBA after which she specialized in human resource management as well as the psychology of systems. In the following years, she was involved in corporate coaching. "The corporate environment never felt like my cup of tea," she shares. "I decided to drop everything and move to Paris and begin afresh. ."

One of the reasons she decided to start over was to try her hand at acting. She fell in the love of. She was dedicated, diligent, and put all of her money and time into learning how to be the most effective actor she could be.

Despite her dedication to her craft, she says she was a decent actress but not a great actor. Like the majority of actors, she suffered from stage anxiety. "Most of my acting colleagues suffered from the same thing," she says. "We were all so passionate, but when it was time to play, we were afraid ."

She became curious about what was blocking her, and other actors from becoming excellent actors. "My curiosity became an obsession," the actress says. "I wanted to know why actors who are so devoted and passionate shrink when it's time to perform. ."

For the next several years, she researched how actors could feel restricted. Her study led to an understanding that when children are playing, they're in control. While when adults are playing the same way, they've been deprived of their independence due to the societal norms. "When I realized this I spent the rest of my time really aiding actors to break out of their conditioning to allow them to appear and act and have that youthful energy they used to have," explains Jo.

She began as a coach

Jo's research experience led her to investigate various techniques for somatic healing and then tested them on other people via group and private coaching sessions in the beginning of 2000. In the following years the business was named To Be Or Not To Act.

Then she realized the people she worked with were not able to demonstrate responsibility. "No regardless of how committed the people I worked with were, they couldn't be expected to attend every day. Although we would meet at least three times per week, the accountability wasn't there between sessions. The ball would be dropped without a problem if they were not with me." Jo says. Jo.

She decided that online courses could help individuals be more consistent with their routine. Her online classes as "journeys," and the initial journey that she guides people to will be The Reset: From Resistance to Freedom--which she developed in the year 2014. "I began to design The Reset so that I could help people through an entire 33 days," she explains.
"Since it's online, people can do it at their own pace and manage their own schedule."

It's Jo's belief that we are born with a true essence, and then our society's conditioning forces that we behave as we think, feel, and act the way we do. According to her, the purpose the purpose of The Reset is for people to perform daily exercises that allow them to shed their conditioned behavior and revert back to their natural instincts. Every day during The Reset, Jo offers recordings of exercises. Additionally, she offers two Q&A sessions and two working in groups via pods and a second semi-Q&A in which Jo answers frequently asked questions on a private Facebook group.

Being able to adjust the timing of an online adventure makes it possible for Jo's members to participate in the lessons at any time in time; when they wake up, before they go to bed or any time they've got spare time throughout the day. "The most appealing aspect is that it allows them to make these sessions work within their schedules," she explains.

She built an online business which gave her the flexibility to lead a lifestyle

When Jo first launched her online Reset journey, she was able to log every single session held through her site. A couple of years later she switched over to the platform after being encouraged to join Reset through her trainer. "You people know exactly what you're doing and I don't," she laughs.

In the last few years, since she entered the coaching online space, Jo's life has changed. At the time of this interview, Jo was calling from the hospital, in which she was accompanied by her daughter. "Eight years ago, my child was born to a genetic spectra, which means that she is in need of hospital visits every month," she says.

" enables me to be a mom and take care of my own life, while maintaining my business going, even when I'm at the hospital while my daughter gets her monthly transfusions," she adds. "Working online allows me to care for my daughter in the way I'd like to and be always at home for her. This allows me to go to hospital for medical needs while still being able to be a part of a profession I'm enthusiastic about without it being stressful ."

Her subsequent travels were her own creations.

When people are done with The Reset, they have the option to go into a three-month journey called The Intentional Actor. The Purposeful Actor journey is a 3 hour session over twelve weeks. "The participants here are a little more autonomous when it comes to responsibility and proving their worth. There are some routines that they must follow daily, but they can't rely on my energy to do the work; they must think of their own goals, and that is what the purpose." Jo shares.

Jo is also available for Q&As through the journey of The Purposeful actor and each week for three weeks. Then, once people have completed that Purpose journey and are ready, they can opt to join a yearly membership called BAMF Actors In Action, that stands for Bad-Ass Mother F***ing Actors In Action. "I made this membership in order to help people who had finished both of the journeys would like to continue practicing on this pathway," she says.

The membership has been running for four years and it offers a content-based program every month, group work via weekly pods, a every month Q&A sessions with Jo the host, as well as a 6 hour summit once every three months. "The membership lets people decide how they're going to go out into the world, accomplish what they're supposed to do, get connected to the world of work, develop the content they want to create, and improve their instrument," she explains.

She has coached performers of all types

According to Jo Jo, the vast majority of her clients on her sessions are actors. There are other types of artists, like writers, dancers, storiestellers and even singers as well regular people who "want to improve their physical limitations," such as mothers and professionals like pro athletes television hosts, pro athletes, and therapists. "Freedom is a concern to anyone who wants to be fully expressed," she says.

Because the tours are conducted in English the journeys attract travelers from around the globe. "We are a diverse group of people, from all continents, but the majority of people are from America, Europe, and Australia," she shares.

Most of her audience is aged between 20 and 50. Some of her audience members are who are in the third phase of life, as well as it's not uncommon to see her welcome people who are in their 70s or 80s to join her on her journeys.

She let her clients do the talking

With regards to marketing her adventures, Jo says the word was spread via the word of mouth.

The homepage on her website, she's embedded an online testimonial reel. This provides proof of social status and increases the credibility of her efforts. Additionally, visitors to the website can subscribe to her email newsletter on her website. She also has an Instagram page -- which boasts more than 10,000 followers. Her page also receives press coverage from interviews on various podcasts, blogs and in magazines.

She opted for a price that is affordable.

Jo strives to make her journeys cost-effective for everyone, as actors typically be in a state of flux with their income. "If you went to an acting studio once a week, it would cost you between $300 to $400. The majority of time, you'll sit down and watch other people do scenes and sometimes, you get an opportunity to take a turn" she says.

"These online journeys offer a lower cost alternative," continues Jo. "The benefits of our travels are 10x what we sell the journeys for." ."

The Reset costs below $1,000 USD. Purposeful Actor is $1,250 USD and membership is $270 USD a month.

She stayed in her zone of the greatest genius

Even though she is the chief executive officer Of To Be Or Not To Act, Jo is firm in her determination to focus all time in her zone of genius--which is coaching and creating content. She doesn't feel tech-savvy, and prefers to remain "in in the flow" doing what she does best. "The remaining tasks of running a business I'm not interested in because they're not my realm of expertise" she explains.

Jo credits her success by hiring a coach from at an early stage. In the end, when it came time to create evergreen journeys, she took a risk and enrolled in a class of $20k to learn how to do so. "It was a big stretch that required me to take on a loan of half the money. But I'm glad that I was able to do it," she shares.

She believes for anyone to create an online business that's successful. But, she advises that it's not easy.

"It is a commitment and determination, and you have to have a passion for what you do. It's what I've done since switching professions in my early twenties and it's all I'll ever accomplish. The passion for it is the reason that, when I'm faced with a challenge and I'm not going to give up. ."

She created from the heart

She advises online creators to be realistic about the hard work that they'll need to put into building an online enterprise. She suggests that they do so only if the topic they're teaching is one that's close to their hearts.

"The danger now is that the moment you join social media, everyone is an expert and everybody will tell you how easy it is to make millions of dollars in just a couple of minutes and that's just not true," says Jo. "It is true that if something is you are passionate about it is possible to reach the world's largest audience than that of your neighbors. It takes effort, as well as falling, and then getting up. You need to be coached, and putting in your time and money until your foundation is in place. ."

Like Jo, when you build an enterprise from the heart, it will give you the determination to stick with it--even through the hard times.

"An online business doesn't simply provide an opportunity for you to earn some money. It must be constructed out of your soul, from what you're meant to be doing. Otherwise you will drop the ball as it'll feel too hard." she explains.

"If you're on purpose then you'll be able to take on the challenge. If you're looking for a quick money grab, you won't be able to take them on. I suggest you apply your passions to your heart. It is essential to excel at your job because you're facing an intense level of competitors. It is essential to be confident in what you do ."

Her integrity was maintained with her craft

When asked about online course trends we may observe in 2024, Jo believes that there will continue to be over-use of programs online. She says that the main distinction between "McDonald's" courses and the "gourmet" courses will be courses that are designed with integrity.

"When there's an abundance of things, there will exist two different types of online jobs. There'll be McDonald's style courses and then there'll be reliable Gourmet courses. Everyone is going to have a program to do the opposite of your life that won't come from an honest place And then there will be those who've been doing it for a long time," she says.

To create the gourmet style of course she suggests you go back to the core.

"There is incredible potential for anyone who is grounded by their hearts and desires to give back," she continues. "The individuals who need your services will come across you ."

"I'm grateful to which enables us to connect as humans for what matters to us. It's incredible."
